Every Real Food Family Needs These!

I love that I can whip up a batch anytime I have an hour of margin time and they last on the counter for a few days. Or, I can freeze them for later use. Anytime we are doing a hike with friends or a picnic on the go, these bagels are what I reach for.

Ingredients In Yogurt Bagels

Flour – We prefer to use fresh ground flour and our favorite for these bagels are to grind soft white wheat berries that we purchase in bulk from Azure Standard. But any all purpose flour or all purpose gluten free flour would work in this recipe.

Baking Powder – Always look for aluminum free baking powder. Our favorite brands are either Bob’s Red Mill baking powder or the aluminum free baking powder from Azure Standard.

Sea Salt – Redmond Real Salt is our go to. We like to buy it in bulk 25 lb bags.

Yogurt – Most recipes call for Greek yogurt, but we use our regular homemade yogurt in this recipe. Just add a little extra flour and these bagels come together perfectly.

Eggs – You could use either the whole egg or just the egg white for an egg white wash on top of the bagel.

Seasonings (Optional) – Just keep it plain or add everything bagel seasoning, poppy seeds, sesame seeds, or cinnamon sugar.

How to Make Yogurt Bagels

Begin by preheating the oven to 375°F and gathering ingredients.

In a medium sized mixing bowl, mix 2 cups of flour, baking powder, and salt.

Then, add in the yogurt and mix well. You are looking for a dough that can be handled and is not too sticky. If you are using Greek yogurt, a 1:1 flour to yogurt ratio will likely work well to achieve this dough consistency. However, if you are using regular plain yogurt, you’ll likely need to add more flour to achieve that tacky dough texture.

I slowly add between an additional ½ cup to 1 cup of flour in small increments until the dough can be handled without being overly sticky.

Lightly flour work area and knead dough 15-20 times.

Divide the dough into 8 equal portions.

Roll out each ball of dough in roughly a 3/4” rope and form into a circle, attaching the ends together.

In a shallow bowl, mix 2 eggs. Carefully coat bagel in the egg wash. The egg wash serves 2 purposes. It enhances the appearance, and if you are topping the bagel with seasonings, it gives them a surface to stick to.

Optional, sprinkle seasonings on top of bagel if using. Lay on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper or a silicone baking mat.

Once all bagels are formed and coated in egg wash, bake for 20-25 minutes. Let cool before slicing.

What’s the difference between using regular and Greek yogurt in this recipe?

The only difference is that regular yogurt, like the plain homemade yogurt that we use, is not quite as thick as Greek yogurt. So if you are using regular yogurt instead of Greek yogurt in this recipe, you will need to add an additional ½ cup – 1 cup of flour in order to achieve the right texture.

How to store yogurt bagels?

Store in an air tight container on the counter for 2-3 days. For long term storage, transfer to the freezer and thaw before you want to eat them.
