In our family, some of our kids like potatoes more than others. But we are learning that it may be less about the potato and more about the presentation. One child will eat potatoes any way they come. Another is much more resistant.

UNLESS, it’s these crinkle cut potatoes or potato pancakes.

Now, when we want roasted potatoes as a side dish with our burgers or steak, we make crinkle cut potatoes every time!

What Do You Need

The Ingredients:

Potatoes – From a russet to a red or yellow potato, any will work in this recipe. Our favorite are the Carola potato that we grow in our garden—a yellow potato similar to a Yukon Gold with a delicious, creamy texture and buttery taste.

Fat or Oil – Because you are roasting your potatoes in a hot oven over 400°F, it’s best to use a heat-stable cooking fat. We prefer cooking these in tallow, lard, or coconut oil.

Seasonings – Salt and pepper are a must but we also like to add the organic “no salt” seasoning from Costco to add some spice to the potatoes.

The Equipment:

Besides a couple of glass baking dishes or rimmed cookie cheese for roasting the potatoes in the oven, you need a crinkle cutter.

We’ve found this kitchen tool to be a great one to have in our drawer for both cooking as well as giving our soap bars a fun wavy edge. It’s also a fun tool for kids wanting to help in the kitchen to use!

One of our kids recently asked what makes crinkle cut potatoes taste so good. Our best guess is the added roasted surface area from the wavy crinkle cut that makes each bite more crispy and flavorful!

How to Make Homemade Crinkle Cut Potatoes in the Oven

Preheat oven to 425°F.

If you are using a solid cooking fat (like tallow, coconut oil, or lard), while the oven is preheating, place the baking pan or cooking sheet with cooking fat in the oven for it to melt.

While the oven is heating up and the fat is melting, slice the potatoes.

Ideally, the size of the crinkle cut potatoes would be as even as possible (I aim for roughly 1/8 – 1/4 inch) but don’t worry if some end up a little thinner or thicker than others.

After you have sliced the potatoes, remove pans from oven. I like to coat the potatoes in the melted fat before placing in a single layer on the baking pan. If you are using a liquid fat, drizzle fat onto pan and coat potatoes the same way. A single layer is important so they cook evenly.

Sprinkle the top side with salt and other desired seasonings.

Place in your heated oven and bake for 25-35 minutes.

Tip: I intentionally left a wide range there to account for how thick the potatoes are sliced. Thicker potatoes will need more time than more thinly sliced ones. But I’ve found around 30 minutes to generally be the sweet spot.

After they are cooked and starting to get lightly golden, remove from oven. Let sit for a couple of minutes undisturbed before serving. I find that this helps them to crisp up a bit to really give them the taste of crinkle cut fries, only without frying.

Can crinkle cut potatoes be made in advance?

This is not a recipe to make in advance. These crinkle cut potatoes are best when they are served hot and fresh! You can store leftovers in an airtight container in the fridge to reheat later but the texture is not quite the same as when they are made fresh.
