Summer is salad season on the homestead. Fresh lettuce is one of those plants that grows so quickly. In order to keep it from going to seed, we often are harvesting it multiple times each week. So, there are no shortage of salads to eat and homemade salad dressings to try!
Homemade vs. Store Bought
While buying salad dressing from the grocery store has become the norm, there are several reasons why, for us, it is one of those things that we will always opt to make ourselves.
- Store-bought options are almost always filled with junky ingredients, especially the oils. And, if you can find a dressing with high-quality ingredients, they are usually very expensive.
- You are in control of the ingredients. This is great to be able to source high quality ingredients and oils but also you can play around with the flavors to make a better tasting dressing as well.
- Making your own dressing is quick and easy! Most recipes, this delicious honey mustard salad dressing included, only use simple pantry staples and comes together in just a couple of minutes.
What Do You Need
Making your own salad dressing is not a recipe that requires exactness. I’ll share our specific recipe below to make a creamy honey mustard that we love but there are a lot of options for substitutions. Or, amounts can be tweaked to make it sweeter or have a tangier flavor depending on your preferences.
Ingredients
Mayonnaise – You can make your own mayonnaise or buy from the store. We avoid vegetable and seed oil based mayonnaise. Instead, we buy the avocado oil mayonnaise from Costco if purchasing, or make our own with olive oil or avocado oil.
Tip: You could also substitute plain Greek yogurt or sour cream for the mayo or use half mayo and half yogurt. This is the key ingredient to differentiate the recipe from a honey mustard vinaigrette with its creamy texture and thicker consistency.
Maple Syrup or honey
Mustard – There are a lot of options when it comes to mustard. You can use yellow mustard, dijon mustard, or even spicy mustard depending on what you like!
Apple Cider Vinegar or lemon juice
How to Make Creamy Homemade Honey Mustard Dressing
Making this dressing is as simple as collecting your ingredients and mixing them together in a small bowl.
Then it’s ready to drizzle over your favorite salads. Because of it’s sweet yet tangy flavor, my favorite way to use this dressing is in a salad with berries, nuts, some fresh farmhouse cheddar, and maybe avocado. It’s the perfect balance of flavors and textures in my opinion.
Another option is to use it as a dipping sauce instead. This creamy sauce would go great with pork chops or chicken.
To store, keep in an air tight container for up to a week. We like to use a mason jar with a lid for this.
