September is here, our apples are ripe for the picking from our trees, and despite the 90 degree weather, it has us dreaming of fall. Since it will still be a few weeks until our winter squash is ready, right now the focus on our homestead is on apples.

We are making applesauce to can for the winter months, apple sweet potato hash is one of our favorite fall meals, and this apple cobbler or apple oat crumble are our go-to’s when we need an easy (but delicious) dessert.

Grab a few apples, and let’s get started!

Ingredients in Easy Apple Cobbler

Apples – Grab your favorite cooking apples (i.e. Granny Smith, Honeycrisp, Braeburn, or Golden Delicious are some of the best options). Avoid apples that tend to get mushy when cooked, like Gala and McIntosh apples.

Granulated Sugar – Our favorite is sucanat (natural cane sugar), but any white, granulated sugar will work.

Flour – All-purpose or freshly milled flour work well in this recipe. My favorite is soft white wheat for baking.

Lemon Juice – The acid from a little bit of lemon juice helps to keep the apples from browning.

Butter – When it comes to the biscuit-like cobbler topping, butter is our favorite. For dairy-free, coconut oil would work as a substitute.

Baking Powder – For aluminum-free baking powder, we like to buy it from Azure Standard or use Bob’s Red Mill.

Whole Milk or Cream – Both options are delicious, or a dairy-free milk could also be used if needed.

How to Make Easy Apple Cobbler

Begin by preheating the oven to 350°F (180° C) and gather the ingredients for the filling. My favorite way to make this apple cobbler is in a 10” cast iron pan, but a 9×9 inch glass baking dish would also work well.

Slice apples thinly and place into the bottom of the greased pan. You can use peeled or unpeeled apples in this cobbler. On our homestead, because I know that our apples are unsprayed, I like to keep the peels on for the added nutrition, but you can also peel them if you prefer.

Once all of the apple slices are in the pan, add the rest of the ingredients in the filling (sugar, flour, lemon juice, cinnamon, and salt).

Bake filling for 20 minutes so the apples can begin to soften.

While the apples are cooking, it’s time to make the cobbler topping.

Mix the dry ingredients in a medium sized mixing bowl (flour, sugar, baking powder, and salt).

Then add the wet ingredients (melted butter, and milk) to the bowl.

Stir mixture together until just combined and a wet, sticky dough is formed.

When the apples are ready, remove from oven. Add spoonfuls of the topping over the apple filling until it is mostly covered (don’t worry about it being completely covered).

Place the pan back in the oven and cook for an additional 25 minutes until topping is set and apples are soft.

Wait 10-15 minutes before serving, and we highly recommend enjoying this cobbler with a scoop of vanilla ice cream!
