A Childhood Favorite
The other day, Jim and I were reminiscing about our favorite treats during childhood. As a chocolate lover, the classic fudgesicle is my nostalgic favorite while Jim was a huge fan of the similar yet slightly different chocolate pudding pop.
But now as I look at a box of those store-bought fudgesicles, the list of ingredients is shocking.
NONFAT MILK, MALTODEXTRIN, SORBITOL, POLYDEXTROSE, COCOA PROCESSED WITH ALKALI, WHEY, PALM OIL, LESS THAN 1% OF: TRICALCIUM PHOSPHATE, CELLULOSE GEL, MONO AND DIGLYCERIDES, CELLULOSE GUM, MALTED BARLEY EXTRACT, SALT, GUAR GUM, ASPARTAME*, POLYSORBATE 80, ACESULFAME POTASSIUM, POLYSORBATE 65, CITRIC ACID, CARRAGEENAN, NATURAL AND ARTIFICIAL FLAVOR, LOCUST BEAN GUM, CARAMEL COLOR.
Yikes!
This creamy homemade version are fudge popsicles that I feel good about serving to my family!
What Do You Need (Ingredients and Equipment)
This homemade fudgesicle recipe only uses 5 real food and simple ingredients.
Ingredients
Avocado – The secret sauce to these fudgesicles. Avocado gives you healthy fats and nutrients to keep bellies fuller longer and not spike your blood sugar—as well as creating the perfect, creamy texture.
Milk – We use fresh, whole milk but you could easily substitute any non-dairy milk. Or for the creamiest texture and more indulgent treat, swap the milk with heavy cream or coconut cream.
Maple Syrup – Pure maple syrup is my favorite in this recipe and keeps it free of refined sugar. If you don’t have maple syrup, honey is the best substitute.
Unsweetened Cocoa Powder or Carob Powder – We’ve been really enjoying carob powder—a more nutritious alternative to cocoa powder—from Azure Standard. For this recipe, either option, cocoa powder, cacao powder, or carob powder will all work well.
Pinch of Salt
Vanilla Extract (optional)
Equipment
Popsicle molds – We have this silicone popsicle mold with reusable plastic sticks that we’ve been very happy with. Alternatively, you could go old school with paper cups and wooden popsicle sticks.
Blender – The idea here is that you need something to mix up all of the ingredients into a smooth puree. I use my Vitamix for this but any blender, food processor, immersion blender, or mixer could do the trick.
How to Make This Creamy Fudgesicle Recipe
The great thing about these easy homemade fudgesicles is that all you need to do to make them is blend, pour, and freeze.
Gather all of your ingredients and add them to your blender.
Blend until the mixture is thick and creamy.
Pour into your popsicle molds and insert whatever plastic or wooden stick you are using.
Place in the freezer and freeze for 4-6 hours before eating.
How to remove fudgesicles from the mold?
The first time we made popsicles, we ran into some trouble getting the frozen treat out of the mold.
The trick we learned that’s worked every time is to run the silicone mold of the popsicle that you will be taking out under warm water for 10-15 seconds. Then, gently push up on the bottom of the mold and it should release and pop out easily.
How long will these creamy fudgesicles store?
If you will not be eating your fudgesicles right away, you will want to store for longer term use. After they are completely frozen, remove from popsicle container and store in a freezer bag. They will store well in the freezer for 2-3 months.
Can I make these fudgesicles dairy free?
Absolutely! Simply swap whatever type of milk you’d like in place of the cow’s milk.
